HISTORY

Wine is a fundamental stone in the culture of the Cretans. The formation of wild vine in Crete goes back to the 5th millennium b.C., while the viniculture exists as basic activity of the Cretans since the 3rd millennium b.C. Besides, the oldest wine-press, ageing 3.500 years, lies in Vathypetro, only a few kilometers away from our winery stating that Europe’s oldest wine culture was born in Crete and was spread from there throughout Europe. Further to Vathypetro’s wine-press, there are impressive amphoras, huge underground wine storage facilities and relevant images to find allover the Minoan palace, stating not only the existence of wine but also the deep knowledge about it. Since Homer’s Age already the Cretan wine travels allover the world and is enjoyed by the elite of Rome and the landowners of the Middle Age.
